A poem to commemorate the last night before I have my name and gender marker changed.
The time has come where all things end,
This solemn rule, you cannot bend.
The ride was good, this much is true,
Yet I am done, I can't be you.

Your existence was only a shell,
I invented you to keep me well.
Protecting me was your one cause,
Yet losing you, I give no pause.

Don't think me cold, I must let go,
Though part of me, I loved you so.
But time has come to shed my skin,
So I have room to grow again.

Now Kate has come to replace Chris,
But truthfully, I'll tell you this.
We are the same, you're part of me,
Away from you, I cannot be.

But now I'll take the driver's seat,
While you sit back, no fate to cheat.
As never were you meant to lead,
The life I have, you must concede.

Though painful, I solemnly sigh,
My darling Chris, I say goodbye.
Though ruling my life carries weight,
I'll gladly proclaim, "Long live Kate!"
