Contest submission. This is a revision of one of my past stories. Short fiction.
I know how it starts, but not how it ends. The orange and black demon grows fierce as it spews from my fingertips. Like magma, it flows through carcasses of insects and leaves, growing more unrelenting with each gust of wind. The sunlight, once flaring through the trees, now struggles to beam through the scorched air. A new brilliance is cast upon the sky. It is more beautiful than I knew anything could be. A terrible, killing sunset. The roaring heat leeches the forest's vibrant evergreen hue, leaving behind a gray so sick, I hear its cries for mercy. The hissing and popping of the dead, the eerie symphony of the dragon is cut short. The wood is blanketed in a serene silence. The only sound left is the blood pumping through my ears. I stand with my eyes wide. I feel them start to dry out, my tears evaporating before reaching my cheeks. I feel it now, a flow of something rushing into my brain. My body tingles. I think sweat begins to drip from my hairline, but I know that's impossible. I inch towards my creation. Closer. I want it. The pain is not there as I bathe my hand in the glow. Why doesn't it hurt? I don't smell the putrid, meaty smell of burning skin. I don't taste blood on my cracked lips. Why? I want more. I know it'll give me answers when it wants to. The laughing flames pull me in, wrapping around my body like a slithering robe. I feel divine as I embrace my new reddened body. In a flash of light, my scaly flesh and my hardened bone fade to ash, slowly drifting back toward the forest floor.

I'm still here. I know why. I couldn't see its end because it doesn't have one.
