A tongue-in-cheek poem looking at mental health from an anti-psychiatry perspective.
Popping pills from the packet
To medicate the mind
A quick fix, a cure
You're sure you'll find

Blockers, boosters, benzos
Double dose now required
Serotonin depleted
No wonder you're tired

'She suffers with her nerves'
Her mum was the same
Sister, great aunt, grandma
Faulty genes are to blame

Lemsip for a cold
Immodium for the runs
Why not a tablet
When the Black Dog comes?

But the psyche, wild and raging
Drugs merely suppress
Trauma, lack and fear
Beneath the surface unaddressed

Pills mix with poison of
Booze and comfort food
A loud 'NO' to exercise,
Diet, natural ways to boost mood

'I'll keep taking the drugs!'
'It's just who I am...
Yoga, chanting, healing
Nothing more than a sham!'

Prescription on repeat
Becomes your new norm
You choose to believe
That we can't be reborn
