Flash Fiction
Saturday Morning

“Dad sent us out in the back yard, well, me and Jules, anyway. Then when we came in he reminded Jules she had soccer at 10. That’s when Jules realized she was wearing her good sneakers and now they were wet.

Jules got upset so Dad told her to take them off so he could dry them. And Sandy heard him and she said she could dry the insides of the sneakers with her hair dryer. So, she went to get that and Jules sat on the couch to take the sneakers off, but there was sand in them too, and she was getting sand all over the sofa cause she was sitting there taking them off.

So, Dad got out the vacuum and started vacuuming the sand off the sofa but one of the pillows got sucked up by the vac. Dad and I were trying to pull it off but Rex thought we were playing, and he grabbed it too and started tugging. Sandy had just come back with the hair dryer and she turned it on to dry out the sneakers.

And that’s when the pillow ripped, Dad lost his balance and fell over backwards bumping into Sandy, who fell into the bookcase knocking all the books off, and the hair dryer went flying and landed in the feathers and feathers started flying everywhere, and that’s when you came in.”

Everyone looked at Mom standing in the doorway with the groceries. Sandy and Dad on the floor with Rex, feathers and books. Julie standing in the other doorway, holding her old sneakers, and Jimmy calmly explain it all as if he were the narrator.

Struggling to keep a straight face, she sneakily hit ‘video’ on her phone and said, “Please, explain it to me one more time....”
