Write a short essay (500-word max.) about what you learned about Paranormal Romances. If you have a favorite author who writes in this genre, you can write an essay about that author.

Paranormal Romances merges romantic and speculative fiction and lets the writer really go in any direction they choose to. From aliens, vampires and werewolves, to ghosts and unknown entities. I first became aware of this genre in the mid 1990's when I was introduced to author Maggie Shayne. Her Wings of the Night~Twilight series merged vampires with romance and erotica. All of her characters are vividly written, with lots of back story that makes them almost feel human. Maggie Shayne pushes the boundaries with all three genres, as her storytelling pulls the reader and we follow along on the journey with the Vampires. This series is a quest in the fight between good and evil, and if you think the vampires are the bad ones, think again. With sinister people on behalf of the government locking up vampires so they can study and torture them, it’s easy to get on board with the realization that humanity can be ugly. Her character’s also search for unconditional love. The books do well with introducing secondary characters, only to bring them back later in another book where they become the main characters.

Maggie Shayne also write contemporary romance and romantic thrillers. She has a real knack for adding suspense in her stories, and making likeable characters worth rooting for. She refers to herself as a Goddess, and has practiced witchcraft. She believes in the universal law of attraction. What you put out into the universe comes back to you. I have to agree with that thinking. She is heavily into spiritualism as well, and now blogs about that on her website. As I checked her website recently [it’s been a few years since I visited her site] I was happy to see that she is actually giving away books now. That right! If you’re interested you can go to website and get 6 of her free E-books. I find that very generous, but if you’re an avid reader like I am, it very smart branding. Her books are easy to get caught up in, and with most of them part of a series, it won’t be long until you find yourself buying the entire series.

She even wrote for Guiding Light and As the World Turns. These are soaps I grew up watching, and I never knew she wrote for them until today. She became unhappy writing for traditional publishing houses because they didn’t like her ideas and she took a break. Now she’s back, doing things her way, which I think is pretty cool.
