The Constant Heart

‘Twas in the blossoming of womanhood
that, like a rose, your beauty found the sun.
You touched my heart in ways no other could;
the love that grew could never be undone.

I lie beside you in the morning light;
the play of shadows, soft upon your face,
illuminates the source of my delight
that even time's harsh touch cannot erase.

Your hair, now silvered by the passing years,
belies the woman-child seen in your eyes.
We've shared a life of laughter, love, and tears
yet each new day renews my lover's guise.

If no more dawns arrive, I'll be content
with all the years of loving you I've spent.

Prompt: MY VALENTINE - In lyrical form of poetry.
Line Limit: Maximum of 20 lines
Line Count: 14
Form: Shakespearean or English sonnet which consists of fourteen lines written in iambic pentameter, a pattern in which an unstressed syllable is followed by a stressed syllable five times. The rhyme scheme in a Shakespearean sonnet is a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g; the last two lines are a rhyming couplet.
