Poem about the New Year for Poetic Traditions contest
JANUARY

New Year brings the frigid cold
Wintry winds that blow so bold
That chilly first month also brings
Warm Baby New Year on its wings

Baby, sweet and pink and warm
With Winter's blustery icy storms
What explains this paradox
Baby clothes with woolen socks

There seems to be a mismatch there
Like soft and grating, lush and bare
Could it be in Nature's plan
Or are these two some sleight of hand

Maybe not so out of tune
And not December paired with June
Perhaps it's like a coin's sides where
Two different faces make the pair

Could be this is Nature's way
To send a message New Year's Day
Young and old, weak and strong
We all have to get along

Not just yellow, not just red
We must share our earthly bed
Not just black and not just white
All are under one God's sight

Not only warm nor only cold
Not only timid, only bold
That may be why Winter brings
Baby New Year on its wings
