Three Minute Read
Believe

“I’m going home; this is a waste of time.”

“Come on, Ray, a couple more minutes, I promise, I’ve seen it happen!” begged Trent.

Ray looked at him, “How many times have you seen it?” he said, suspiciously.

“OK, well only once, but the guys said it happens all the time. I was too far away so I’m not sure how it starts, but I saw it. Really, I saw it, right here!”

“Five more minutes, five! That’s it Trent, I’ve fallen for your wild stories too many times, they never happen.”

“They do happen, I just can’t prove it…” Trent said, quietly.

Ray started feeling bad, Trent was a good guy, and a good friend, he just lived in a fairytale world. Ray was tired of wanting to believe him but never having any reason. He’d spent a lot of time in the past waiting for Trent’s “miracle” things to happen, things Trent insisted were true, but could never prove. Till now, he’d just humored Trent, going along with it being the wrong time, wrong day, but it was getting old.

“Five minutes, that’s it, right?” he said to Trent.

Trent nodded. Ray could tell he was feeling defeated and started feeling bad for his friend. Maybe his timing was just always off. Or maybe he just believed in strange things that weren’t really true, he certainly wasn’t trying to fool anyone, Ray knew that for sure.

“So,” Ray started, “food just falls down, right? What kind of food? Does it come out of the wood, or what?”

Trent brightened at his friend’s interest, “It kind of hits and floats a bit then sinks! It’s white stuff, one of the guys called it bread… he says it’s yummy!”

Under the bridge the two fish looked up together, waiting.
