A priest gets a nasty surprise. Written for the Dialogue 500 contest.
Do you repent for your crimes, Prisoner, and humbly offer your soul to God that He may accept it or no such as He sees fit?

I repent nothing, Priest. I enjoyed my crimes, and if given my chance over, I would joyfully do them all again. Yes, and more!

Then you are a fool. I strongly urge you to reconsider.

Never. What good could my repentance do now?

God is infinitely merciful. You could save your soul.

Any God that could forgive the crimes I have committed is no God I could ever believe in.

You realise, I hope, the awful consequence of your actions and your lack of repentance?

An eternity in Hell? Ha! I will revel in it!

Then so be it. May God have mercy on your soul, but I fancy I already smell the fires burning.

The fiercer the better. They will warm my soul. But, tell me, Priest, what of you? What of your sins?

What do you mean? I am a man of God. My soul is secure.

But can you be sure of that? What of the thefts, the murders, the rapes? The multitude of crimes you have yourself committed? Committed with your own blood-soaked hands.

Be very careful what you say, wretch. Everything that I have done has been done in the name of God. In His glory. I am not afraid. My conscious is clear.

A murder is a murder, Priest, no matter in who's name it is executed. A crime committed by King, Peasant or Priest is still a crime in the eyes of God.

And yet by sunrise you will be dead and I will still be comfortable in my Priesthood. Such is the way of the world. I will take my leave now. I suggest you use your few remaining hours on Earth to contemplate eternity.

Before you go, Priest, tell me, how is it you came to be here?

It is my solemn duty to try to save souls such as yours. Worthless though they may be.

But how came you here? In this room. With me.

I... well, I...

You don't remember do you? Can’t quite recall.

It.. it's so hot here. I cannot concentrate. My mind is... Why is it so hot of a sudden?

The fires, Priest.

And that noise. That dread unearthly noise. What, in the name of all that is holy, is that awful noise?

The screaming? Lost souls, priest. Like mine. Like yours.

What madness is this? What trickery? Guards!

There is no one here but me, Priest.

Guards! Guards! I wish to leave! Get me out of this Godforsaken place right now!

You cannot leave. You can never leave. There is no one to help you.

The noise! The heat! This is unbearable! I cannot stand it! Help! Help me someone! God, please! Please help me!

God cannot help you now. Not here. Not ever. Welcome, my holy friend. Welcome. To Hell!
