I am just breaking into short stories with my first May Challenge, maximum 500 words. I plan to expand this story after the contest is over. I am fond of both prose and poetry.

"A Mother's Legend"
You devoted your full day to uplifting your family,
Polished them like they were gems,
You never saw them as diamonds in the rough.
They were your paper dolls.
You spent days tailoring custom designs,
Envisioning the finished products,
You marched them through all walks of life,
They were fashion plates in your mind.
Your daughters were your paper dolls in the 1960's,
Grandchildren...your models in the 1980's,
Your great grandchildren were perfection in the 2000's.
You placed them all in fashion parades.
Your daughters were your miniature tap dancers,
Perfected their dance-with-a-dolly costumes for dance recitals,
Fancy dresses for piano recitals and high school proms,
You tailored business suits with kick pleats.
Not to be forgotten were layers of petticoats,
Dotted swiss dresses for your granddaughters,
Matching berets and tailored suits for little boy babies,
Magnificent clothing for church celebrations.
You, Therese, were the little flower and a microcosm of beauty on earth.
Ever pleasing the Lord, you were ingenious, creative, energetic,
Such a gift to bestow on your children seeking direction,
Of what to be, how to grow in a good community, the Lord's world.
Moms know what gifts families are. Moms thank God for another day.
Making a house a home is passed on from moms to children,
From generation to generation.
This is a Mother's legend,
Learned when it's modeled,
Thank God for mothers' legends.
