Three Minute Read
Tidying Up

Sandy flew around the room gathering everything incriminating. If she could just get out before anyone caught her she would be free. How did this unravel so quickly! Yesterday she felt sure she could follow the entire plan through and be on a beach in Italy well before anyone knew anything was amiss. Then just before leaving today she overheard Dixon telling Ron that they needed to “go over the books first thing tomorrow morning!”

She could salvage this. She had plenty already, it was just greedy wanting more. Getting back to the job, hard with just this little flashlight but she couldn’t take chances with lights. If anyone checked, asked questions about why she was here so late, she would jeopardize getting to the airport for tonight’s flight out. This was insurance, if she scrubbed the office and called in sick they wouldn’t even be looking at her till well after she’d disappeared.

Suddenly hearing voices in the hall, she doused the light, and hid behind her door. She had everything now, all that was left was getting out. Whoever it was lingered chatting. As she waited she got more and more nervous, she couldn’t hide if they came in, and would be hard pressed to explain the situation. Quietly she opened the slider to the balcony, if she could jump down to the dumpster from here, she could get away. Hoping for soft trash, she leaped, spraining her ankle, but still, free, and in minutes on her way to the airport.

The next morning Dixon leaned into Ron’s office. “We actually did have the whole series of Laura Ingalls Wilder books; I’d thought we missed one. But we have to put off the surprise party anyway, Sandy called in sick today, the poor kid, sick on her birthday…”
