A metaphor for life via the circus.
The Circus of Life

In a hidden place, a hidden land,
Is somewhere no one understands;
People come and people go,
Laugh and cry watching the show.

Dancers dance and singers sing,
Actors bring all they can bring;
Simply mirth with fleeting strife?
This is a circus, this is life.

In a lonely room boys watch as she juggles their hearts,
One to six, eyes fixed, while she giggles, while she laughs.
Cries, gasps fly as one shatters on the floor,
A thousand pieces scattered, a boy drops through a trap door.

The contortionist distorts to what they want to see,
Slowly bringing every single viewer to their knees.
Mesmerised, awe-struck surprise, they believe they have it all,
Then the room begins to spin, it’s empty, they’ve been fooled.

Peek round the corner, an acrobat swinging through rings,
Whistling a lullaby as her partner dances on a shoestring.
They’re perfectly in tune and entwined, they’ll never be apart,
Simply for each other, not the viewers, love’s work of art.

In a hidden place, a hidden land,
Is somewhere no one understands;
People come and people go,
Laugh and cry watching the show.

Dancers dance and singers sing,
Actors bring all they can bring;
Simply mirth with fleeting strife?
This is a circus, this is life.
