Short story Excerpt
“She’s afraid.” Jen said walking up beside him.
“She has a right to be.” He said wearily looking after Annalise as she scurried towards the back garden
“Give her time Adrian, she needs to adjust.”
“How much longer?” he said exasperated, “We need her corporation if this is ever going to work.” She smiled slyly at him. “The fact that she is still here after a whole month in your menacing presence shows the girl has courage. She is defiant and coping better than most. Give her time.” Jen said again
“I am not menacing. He said through gritted teeth. “A month is long enough don’t you think? I mean how much more accommodating and approachable can I be? To be honest I think I broke the bloody record with my kindness.” He heard Jen chuckle beside him. He spared her a glance and shook his head looking back at where Annalise escaped to. “Patience, liege. It’s a virtue.” Jen chuckled again as she turned away and headed back.

The next morning Annalise awoke to the sun hitting her face. The room she was put in was pretty large to be considered a prison, but served as one none the less. Although her hosts tell her that she is not a prisoner and can come and go as she pleases she knew it was a lie. She’s been living in the same room for the past month and nothing has gotten accomplished. Tyler was still missing, her mother and father dead, her abandoned, her house in ruins. Unfortunately before she could run away these people came in and took her instead. When they came for her she thought it was the same men that came and took Tyler away. She was scared to death and has not uttered, but two words in the past month living here. She rarely leaves her room and when she does it is only because she was summoned. These people have been nothing, but friendly and should be most assuredly trusted, but Annalise disagreed. No one could be trusted. She learned that the hard way when those men came to take Tyler and killed her parents. She would never trust anyone ever again. Now lying in her bed she looked over to the large square window on the other side of the room and marveled at the sight. For a room she liked to call her prison Annalise had a very beautiful view. A flower bed, with trees just outside and when she sometimes opened her window she could listen to the birds sing and the bees buzz searching for their next flower victim. Getting up she made her way towards it to open it and listen to the birds early this sunny morning. They always sang to her, their melodies always in tune. They made her smile and wish she too could fly away with them singing their song. Sitting at her window she started to hum her mother’s old lullaby.
