A slightly overdue Christmas poem
Season’s Greetings (Part One)

The cat sat on the mat
On a quiet Christmas eve
On the mat it sat
Whilst the children who believe
Lay anxious curled up sleeping
Dreaming of the day
A day so slowly creeping
When Santa mounts his sleigh
Pulled the night shift once again
Though grumble, he will not
As adults mix the grape and grain
Wine mulled… and Eggnog tots
With presents under trees, now stowed,
and stockings stuffed to burst
Bucks Fizz lined up in a row
To quench a festive thirst
Turkey in the oven, roast,
sprouts out on the stove
Pans bubble overseen by hosts
Whilst guests hungrily drove
Mince pies piled up on plates
And nuts laid out in bowls
Crackers we’ll be pulling late,
and Holly decked through halls
With carrots for the reindeer
Laid out on the hearth
To raise their burden, cheer
Strengthening their path
And up there in the starlit sky
Santa’s sleigh soars true
Through the wind and rain it flies
The deer pull it through
Meanwhile, sitting on the mat
The cat he takes his place
On the mat, its smugly sat
Observing shadows race
Silhouettes, moon cast on full
Sleigh bells ring out of sight
Merry Christmas to you all
And to you all… good night
