A mother explaining the death of a family member to her young child. |
Last night I saw my mommy cry. She said, "There's just something in my eye." She sniffed and smiled and touched my hand. Then she told me what God had planned. She explained about Heaven and the path we take, And how sometimes things happen that makes our heart break. We talked about Grandma, Grandpa and Old Uncle Joe. "Remember 'walking the dog' with his yellow yo-yo?" She laughed through her tears and hugged me in close. I took a deep breath and for a moment I froze, "What is it Mommy? Is everything okay?" She kissed my cheek and whispered, "Let's pray." My bottom lip quivered as I got down on my knees. My stomach was queasy, my mind ill at ease. "Okay, baby," my mom gently sighed, "It's time for us to say our good-byes." "To who Mommy? Who did we lose? Was it their choice? Could they refuse?" She sat on the floor and pulled me in tight, "He was very sick, but now he's alright. Uncle Joe came to this life with a purpose - a plan. He worked really hard and in war took a stand. He raised three boys with your Great Aunt Rousseau. He was a goof father and husband - a pleasure to know." I listened to my mom talk through her tears; She helped me remember all of the years That I've known Uncle Joe and the fun that we had Playing and laughing; but it still made me sad. "Oh, Sweety," she sighed, "just know he's in Heaven With God and Jesus, and your Great Grandpa Stephen. Smiling down on us and wishing us well. Then, mom's eyes lit up like a twinkling bell, "Know that Uncle Joe is here, deep in out hearts. With his love and joy that are forever a part Of our precious memories, that we hold dear. And remember, at any time of the year Miracles can happen through the power of prayer. Just close your eyes, and Uncle Joe will be there." We prayed to the Almighty, in Heaven on High. In His grace we thanked Him; we said our goodbyes To Old Uncle Joe - with Jesus he walks. And to the Trinity; forever our rock In good times, bad times and those in between. To the ultimate faith in all things unseen. We thanked God for the love of each other. Then, I snuggled in close on the lap of my mother. Tracy Henson |
