Aging in a young mans body
My heart beats slower each day
A softening of the pain.
The gentle thump
My only reminder of life
With graying hair; the epitome of strife,

My head sinks; fraught with thoughts
How much of my life was for naught?
How long is left?
The answers to these
Were what I sought.
Can I still fight; or was the battle already fought?

Aye, fought it was, but over it is not
I've served my time on this Earth
but I'm determined to go with a bang
Not with a fizz.
This I promise, to all I am with.

So steady, my heart, and
beat like a drum.
Bring that gentle thump to a crescendo and
Pound away steady and loud
For I am not ready yet to go
And I shall not simply fade away
Though my heart beats slower each day.
