Money for those in need

Lara sat, curled up on her sofa: It was Friday night so she was in her cosy pyjamas, eating chocolate and drinking wine. She wasn’t planning on watching TV; she was planning to read. But she’d flicked it on to see something and had managed to get herself transfixed for the evening.

It was Comic Relief night: One of Britain’s biggest bi-yearly televised fundraisers. Predominantly raising money for people living in dire situations in Africa. The evening was filled with tear-jerking videos of children and adults going through horrendous, unimaginable situations.

When her husband walked through the door, Lara tried to hide the tears that had been running down her cheeks.

“What’s wrong, chicken?” Paul said. Lara had obviously failed in her attempts at deception.

“These poor kids in Africa,” she sobbed, “they shouldn’t need to live like that!”

“I know love, it’s awful. I might have something to cheer you up though.”

“What’s that?”

“Well, work bought each of the team a scratch to say thanks for this week, and I won…”

“Yeah? How much? A tenner?”

“errm, no. I won £20,000!”

“Woaaah seriously? That’s amazing!” Lala leapt and hugged her hard working husband.”

“I know, I know. We can put it towards an extension. How awesome!”

“That’s great love,” just as Lara said these words, the TV, that had been paused, started playing again. Once more there were scenes of starvation, illness and death. Tears welled up in her eyes faster than she expected given their good news.

Paul looked into his wife’s eyes for what felt like an eternity before he finally spoke.

“Actually, scrap that. What are we waiting for? Pick up the phone.”

“What? Why?”

“We’re donating it. They need the money more than we do!”

Lara hugged her husband as tightly as she could!
