A poem about the death of an old man in a small town.

Fade to Blue

Did you hear

That Mr. Lorenzo died

On a hot Saturday afternoon

The last thing he said to me was

Good morning”

His daughter found him

I heard it was in the bathroom

I think

It was on his bed

He left a will

A million dollars

That’s what everyone says

He’s been keeping the money

Under his mattress

Since the Great Depression

I don’t believe it personally

Who could keep that much

Under a mattress

He was a war hero

Heard he fought in

World War II

He used to tell his friends

He killed Hitler

They knew he didn’t

But those were the jokes

You told to your friends those days

I wonder

What his daughter will do

With all that money

Maybe she’ll pay for her daughter’s education

I think she needs a vacation though

The divorce has left bags under her eyes

But it’s got me thinking

What will people do when I’m gone

You know

My dad died when I was seven

And I didn’t cry

I hope my son

Cries when I’m gone.
