to honor our vets
The hearts of paper hung
from the ceiling of the hall.
All were there to party
for the valentines day ball.

Cake and punch a plenty,
to make the day complete,
and no one knew at first,
the old soldier they would meet.

But he walked up to the bandstand,
took the mic in his hand.
Here's a heart that you forgot.
As he smiled at the band.

From in his pocket he drew a heart,
held it up for all to view.
He said I'd like to tell a story,
of this kind of heart, for you.

Many have fought for freedom,
and some have earned this heart.
So you can have this day,
to honor your sweetheart.

The heart was gold and shiny,
from the purple ribbon that it hung.
And the crowd was deadly silent,
as the old man's story then begun.

Have your party and celebrate,
hang your hearts of red,
but never forget the blood,
that for you, a soldier shed .

Honor them each day,
for each day they fight for you,
and among the hearts you hang,
hang the Red White and Blue.

And as he left the stage so silent,
he put the mic back in the stand,
and the crowd started cheering,
and gave the man a hand.

The paper hearts all hung
from the ceiling of the hall,
and the flag of our country,
hung in the center of them all.
