Nalya is a clumsy elf. She had to bring a heavy book and she drops it on her toes.
The Heavy Book

Nalya was an elven maiden known among her fellow elves for her clumsiness. She was a very pretty elf with a red hair and a lean body. She wandered around barefoot like most elven maidens did. Almost every elf in her tribe was talented in some way. Some were able to craft miraculous things; others were great hunters or powerful sorcerers. Nalya wasn’t able to find her talent beside the ability to ruin everything she had ever tried.

An enchantress named Aliria had heard about Nalya and her desperate attempts to find something where she could be successful. Aliria was an experienced elven enchantress, her blond hair was long and she wore a simple white robe as a token of her position in the tribe and her smooth feet were barefoot. She was respected by all elves and renowned for her kind heart.

When Aliria had decided to take Nalya as one of her apprentices the younger elf was full of joy. She came to her new master and tutor in her woolen tunic and a humble expression on her face. Aliria had explained to Nalya her new position with her melodic and calm voice and told her about her duties and responsibilities.

“Your first tasks would be simple. You’ll fetch things for me and help me in other matters. If you attest, I will accept you as my apprentice.” Aliria told the younger elf. Nalya listened carefully and nodded.

“Very well, my young flower. Go fetch me a book The Mystical Roots of Shadow Forest. It’s in the other room of my house”. Aliria ordered.

Nalya nodded respectfully and hurried to the other room of a treehouse the enchantress occupied. The other room was full of bookshelves filled with books. Nalya had had to search for the ordered book before she finally found it on top of one bookcase. She could reach it only if she stepped on her tiptoes. Nalya stretched out and reached the book with her fingers. She tried to grab it but wasn't able to hold it properly. After a few unsuccessful attempts she jumped a bit and pushed the book.

The book toppled for a moment on top of the bookcase and then fell right into hands of the waiting elven maiden. Or so it seemed at the first moment. Nalya had caught the book in its fall but the book slipped off from her grip and fell with its spine right on top of the elf’s left foot.

Nalya withheld a cry by holding her mouth with her right hand and grabbed her left foot with the other hand. The pain was overwhelming. Nalya was able only to hop up and down on her right foot and clutch her hurt left foot. She had to concentrate very hard not to shout in pain. An instep of her hurt foot throbbed in pain as she continued her clutching grip on it. Nalya looked around in desperation and saw a wooden chair not far from her. She had to bite her lip to be able to move her right hand from her mouth to her hurt foot and clutched her leg under her. Then she was able to start to hop towards the chair.

After a few hops filled with silenced painful moans she finally sat on the chair. The instep of her left foot was red and she started to rub it slowly.

“Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!” Nalya whispered to herself while she was rubbing her hurt foot. The pain was slowly fading away. Nalya stayed for a while on a chair rubbing and caressing her hurt foot. When she could wiggle toes of her hurt foot with almost no pain she stood up and hobbled to the fallen book. First few steps were painful but the pain was smaller with each step. When she had angrily grabbed the book she was able to walk without pain in her hurt foot. She cursed silently and went back to the enchantress.

“Oh, you’re back my sweet honey.” Aliria welcomed the younger elf with an amused smile on her face. The enchantress looked down on the red instep of Nalya’s left foot. “Were there any problems, my dear?” The enchantress asked.

“No, there weren’t, my lady.” Nalya answered with her gaze on her toes.

“Very well, then.” Aliria said with a thoughtful look. “Would you give me that book, my flower?”

Nalya had bowed and offered the book to the enchantress while she was still humbly looking down.
The enchantress laid a hand on the book to stroke its’ desks and looked at Nalya. Nalya had felt Aliria’s touch on the book and in thinking that the enchantress is holding the book, the younger elf released it.

The book felt on toes of Aliria’s right foot with a loud thud. Aliria’s eyes went wide and she cried in pain and surprise.

Nalya had frozen in fear and watched the enchantress with a terrified expression.

“Owww! Ouuuch!” Aliria cried and reacted by instinct. She freed her foot from under the book, grabbed her hurt toes with her left hand and started to hop on the other foot.

Nalya watched in frustration and desperation as the enchantress hopped up and down just like her a few minutes before. Aliria clutched her hurt toes firmly with her fingers while her leg was crouched under her. The enchantress had been surprised and almost paralyzed by the pain but quickly collected her thoughts and started to chant a healing spell. She was still hopping up and down because it helped her to ease her pain but she was continuing her chant and was making gestures with her free hand.

Finally the spell had been completed and Aliria felt a calming wave of energy spread in her hurt toes. The pain had been almost gone and Aliria released her hurt toes and slowly put her foot to the floor.
The enchantress stretched her still sore toes and looked angrily on her clumsy apprentice. Nalya took a fearful step back before Aliria’s irritated look.

“Oh, enchantress, I’m so very sorry! I didn’t mean to!” Nalya started to apologize. Aliria stopped her with a resolute gesture.

“Stop it, my rose. I understand that you didn’t do it in purpose. But that hadn’t eased my pain and discomfort as you’ve seen.”Aliria made long pause thinking. “I was about to hit your foot with a spell to see you hop up and down in the same pain as I did, but that’s beneath me.” She said to persuade herself. “Nevertheless, I have to punish you for this, my dear, because you have to learn a lesson from this.”

Nalya bowed in acceptance and waited for her master’s punishment.
