A Soldier's Sound

Can you hear it?
As the concept of freedom
Is fought with blood, sweat and tears
As the soldiers and their families
Standing and saluting, volunteer?

Can you hear it?
As a child writes a letter to their parent
With words that will never be enough
As a parent who reads it holds back tears
Trying their hardest to be tough?

Can you hear it?
As a soldier cries in utter despair
A whole world away
As their dear friend passes
Without sound or delay?

Can you hear it?
As a flag is laid on a coffin
When the family hears the news
As the folded flag is given
To the loved ones in the wooden pews?

Can you hear it?
As they whisper their stories
Into the carved granite of their names
Monuments, memorials, graves
Forever, they stand the same.
