Steve's Journey

Knocking a little harder this time, he aimed his knuckles at a shaper angle to get the loudest sound without actually pounding on the door. Steve had been standing there for over 5 minutes patiently tapping on the door expecting a quick response. He knew Jerry was in there, and that he wasn't answering. Now the commotion was loud enough to stir up one of the neighbors to the left signaling Steve to quiet down. Calmly he took out his phone and called Jerry from his front door, only this time getting an answer.

         "Yeah." Jerry answered abruptly.

"What the fuck man? You won't answer your phone or your door? Let me in already." Steve blurted out.

"No. I'm busy and I can't help you. I'm not coming out and you need stop making so much noise." Jerry said with a steady pace as if he was containing his impatience.

"What the fuck is your problem? Just let me in real quick so I can grab a gram." Steve replied quickly and quietly.

"You are. Everyone has had it with your shit and that includes me. All you've been doing is getting fucked up and you're never fun when you're that far gone. You're already 86'd from The Peg Leg and now you got 86'd from Tony's last night. Nobody wants to deal with your shit anymore and I don't need your money. You need to take off for a while or do whatever you have to do to calm the fuck down. I have to go, don't come banging on my door like that ever again." Jerry said as he abruptly hung up.

Steve looked at his phone is amazement as he didn't even remember being 86'd. Blacking out had become a normal occurrence lately but then again he had never been cut off from his friends in this manner before. He wondered if other friends felt the same way, especially after getting the news of last night. Deciding to walk over to his buddy's place and find out more he headed out from the little complex, turned left and headed down the street towards the corner.

The little round Mexican lady and her daughter were crossing the street to Steve's side a little ways ahead of him. They lived behind Jerry's complex in a small place and Steve was very familiar with seeing the two walk home. As the lady came up the curb in between two parallel parked cars she held the girl with her left hand. Without warning and just as a green Honda came into view driving down the street Steve saw the girl suddenly leave her mother's hand and head back to the street. Having already been walking towards them and seeing it as it happened Steve had a quick enough reaction to dart towards the girl before the lady could turn around.

Coming around the bumper of the parked car he could see the girl kneeled over picking something up and that she was far enough into the road that she is going to be hit. With the Honda in his peripheral he lunged down to the girl and picked her up, raising her high as she was lighter than he was expecting. That was all he could do as the Honda hit them; he tried to jump in that split-second but the bumper hit him. With his arms fully extended up holding the girl and looking up towards her, the back of his skull hits the windshield knocking him unconscious. The Honda skids as the impact happens, Steve's head hits the car but the girl takes a terrifying bounce off the very top of the windshield and tumbled across and off the top the car landing hard in the street near the driver side door. Steve was able to hold her high enough that he took much of the impact leaving the child to sustain minor wounds, he remained unconscious with an irregular pulse during the commotion of the fire department and ambulances up until he arrived at the hospital.
