a sonnet inspired by trying to walk to class
As summer breathes her anger on the air
I bathe in fury—moving through a sea
of heat and wet—and I, a swimmer there
must wade the undertow, or lose what’s me.
For winds will never catch a current’s base
to make tsunamis crash against the shore.
While hurricanes can mar the ocean’s face,
today, my path lies on an ocean’s floor.
I want a storm to rise and break her wrath
but raindrops simply vanish into haze
and thunder stirs new heats to line my path
as I pace slowly through late summer days—

and look ahead to autumn’s gentle bliss
that switches rage to peace through his sweet kiss
