‘Tis but a dream; the shadow on the wall
reminds me of December days now past.
The dancing blinking lights help me recall
those joyous moments that went by too fast.
A cookie and glass of milk left out
to fortify Saint Nick along the way;
In morning light, the presents left no doubt
that he was real, as were his deer and sleigh.
I stand in memory’s doorway and stare.
Unfolding scenes, now twisted in my mind,
unveiling feelings of loss and despair
for all the Christmases now left behind.
These are the shadows of things that have been.
Their magic now exists only within.
