A Poet Died Today:
To Maya Angelou
April 4, 1928 to May 28, 2014
A poet died today,
a renaissance woman
accepted Azra'eil1 embrace
and ascended
into the poet's paradise
where her fiery voice became
rainbow wings
that will carry her
through all the worlds of God.
Listen
and you will hear
the rustling of her wings
as she flies past
whispering consolation
into the ears of those who weep
because her voice is stilled
upon this Earthly plain.
She still sings
her words reverberate
through space and time,
while she
stands before the Throne of Glory
intoning stanza and line.
Line Count: 23
Form: Free Verse
Author's Note: I begin this poem on May 28, 2014 after I read about her passing, I put that version in "Snow Melt" under "A Poet Died Today: To Maya Angelou" . I did not like the last line in that poem because it did not feel right. I completed the poem on May 29, 2014 and changed only the last line.
