Part of a series entitled "Nature's Echoes". My attempt at a storytelling style poem.
Late this breezy, April night
Our love was tested by a fight
We had an unforgiving bout
The clouds rolled in, as you walked out

A storm was brewing, strong and quick
The clouds were dark, gloomy, and thick
And they completely blocked the moon
Moments after you left the room.

And all the while, I followed you
Not really knowing what to do
I tried to stop you, make you stay
But you just screamed then drove away

And as I reentered my home
Then realized I was alone
I quit pretending, stopped the lies
And there, on bended knees, I cried

The lightning flashes, raindrops fall
The thunder boomed and shook the wall
Not a moment then would pass
Before I heard a squeal and crash

I rush outside into the rain
I look around but all in vain
I cannot see beyond my tears
It hasn’t rained this hard in years

We fought, but you were not my foe
I never wanted you to go
But now, once more upon my knees
With face in palm, I cry out “Please!”

I say your name, but do not yell
Then in the distance, sirens wail
And blindly I follow the sound
As my whole world turns upside down

Now stuck inside an awkward trance
I stagger toward the ambulance
And then I see you on the ground
But you don’t move or make a sound

In shock, I stand in the downpour
What my eyes see I can’t ignore
You’re lying lifeless in the street
My life soon will be incomplete

Thunder rumbled, clouds explode
As nature echoed thoughts untold
Making audible my heart
As it breaks then falls apart

These are lies, This can’t be real
This is more than I can feel
This pain’s too great, I must confess
I was not built to take this stress

Then suddenly I am restrained
I protested, fought back, complained
A paramedic yells, “Calm Down!”
Then two men place me on the ground

They tell me that you’ll be ok
That there’s no need to feel this way
That you’re alive and coming to
Despite what you had just been through

They talked about what caused the crash
That you MAY have been driving fast
But swerved to miss a passerby
And SURELY you had saved her life

They said the jogger called them out
Even explained the quickest route
Offered to pay for everything
And still has never left the scene

“What fool would run in all this rain?”
“A jogger!?” I inquire again
“What do you mean?” They ask of me
“The sky is clear, can you not see?”

“Just take a moment, look around
Feel your clothes and touch the ground
You’ll find there is no moisture there
Nor on the streets or in the air.”

My shirt is dry to my surprise
I guess the rain came from my eyes
I feel so very out of place
With raindrops only on my face

I look around in disbelief
It seems the storm clouds were my grief
I could not see beyond my tears
They haven’t rained this hard in years
