Entry for the Daily Flash Fiction Challenge. Prompt="You obviously don't know who I am." |
Robert Bailley walked into his small, family owned bakery at five forty five in the morning as he had every day for the past fourteen years. As Robert began to set out the tables and chairs lining the outside of his business, he heard the unassuming jingle of the bell above the door as his sixteen year old son Robert Jr. (or Robbie as he liked to go by these days) entered. “Good Morning Robert, I would have given you a ride earlier but you we’re still asleep!” Receiving no response Mr. Bailey repeated himself. Again to no avail. Walking over and tapping him on the shoulder, Robert shouted at his son “ROBBIE!” Noticing the miniscule ear bud headphones as the teenager removed them from his ears, Mr. Bailey felt the heat rush to his face “You’re always wearing those things! I can never have a conversation with you, that’s what makes your generation so useless and lazy; you’re always plugged into something!” Sighing and turning to face his irate father Robbie calmly began to explain himself “Dad, I wasn’t being lazy, I was doing my homework for school, I’ve been trying to tell you for months now, I’m taking a music production class, and it’s what I want to study in college.” Feeling the anger explode out of him the elder Robert Bailley rose to his full height “There is no way you’re going to support yourself making music; you’ll work here until you graduate high school and then major in business just like we’ve talked about!” With another long sigh Robbie turned and walked towards the door, stopping for just a second to turn back towards his father “Dad, you obviously don’t know who I am. And I’m sure not you.” |
