The two girls sat in the detention classroom.
The two girls sat in the detention classroom. Blonde haired Sherry sat in the first row dutifully working on the detention assignment. Three rows back sat Cathy. Although they both shared the same classroom and teachers they never really had a reason to talk to one another.
“Psst. Psst. Hey Blondie.”
“Leave me alone.”
“Hey Blondie whatta you in for?” Cathy was using a fake voice to sound like a movie gangster.
“I'm not supposed to talk to you. Mrs. Dillwhistle expressly made that clear. I don't want anymore trouble. So please, leave me alone.”
“Blondie.”
“My name is Sherry.”
“So, Blondie, what'cha do to get in here?”
“I called someone a name at recess. I shouldn't be talking to you”
“Whoa, Blondie what did you say?”
“I rather not repeat it. I feel bad for using it. You know I am not even sure what it means. I hear my dad use it all the time and when I got mad it came flying out of my lips. I just know my parents will be waiting to wash my mouth out with soap.”
At the word soap both started to laugh. Neither noticed Mrs. Dillwhistle enter the classroom until she slammed a wooden ruler down on the desk sending shock waves through the two girls. They turned around with their heads down.
“Telling jokes now Miss Cathy? Another week's detention for you. And Miss Sherry, you were warned, were you not?”
“Yes, Ma'am.”
“You were told to sit here, be quiet, and complete your assignment. Since you cannot follow orders, I guess another week's detention is in store for you as well.”
Sherry looked up and then looked back to Cathy. It came out just as easy as if it were everyday language.
“Bitch! Oops.”
