I wrote this after listening to Thin Lizzie's song 'Jailbreak'
Jailbreak

The guard walked passed my cell. His rounds taking him past my cell every sixty seven breaths. This was the key to my success. The head jailer had boasted that no-one could escape from his prison. I aimed to prove him wrong.

The new jailor had introduced a regimented way of doing things. Each night when the prison should have been deep in sleep. half the guards were to train in combat for two hours and then swap with the other half, this opened my window of opportunity up to one hundred and thirty four breaths between visits.

The section of the jail i was in overlooked the gallows. One corridor of cells four to a side, with iron bars across the full frontage. The outer walls were two foot thick, no torches were wasted on us during the night it was total darkness apart from what little moonlight made its way through the tiny slits high on the walls. At one end stairs led to the next level up and at the other stairs ran down into the torture area. The screams coming from downstairs tore at the soul, the children were the worst; their screams followed you into sleep.

The time came i waited until the guard had been patrolling half an hour and was bored before i made my move. As he disappeared up the stairs at the end of the corridor i started on the lock of my door with the rudimentory lockpick i had fashioned from a nail. I felt into the lock and after a few seconds i was rewarded with two clicks, i was getting close, but the guards light was descending the stairs, i had thrown myself on my pallet hoping he had not heard me, i had left the nail in the lock; i prayed that the Gods would smile on me.

The guard walked past my cell and descended down into the lower level. i resumed my lock picking, click the lock had released with a snicking sound, but now the guard was at wrong end. i now had to wait for him to make another pass.

With the guard upstairs once again i made my way to the stairs leading downwards, the smell is overwhelming, burnt flesh, feaces, urine, and blood. I am greatful that i could not see into the cells, the sights within that pit of hell would have burnt into your soul destroying all sanity. i hurriedly made my way to the opposite end of the stairs below, as reach the bottom i peered into the light from several torches set into iron sconces on the wall. i was looking for a uniform, everything had rested on there being a uniform. I had tried a foot locker at the end of a pallet bed, i was in luck, i got dressed quickly and headed for the door and the practise yard. i opened the door and strode out with purpose only two gates between me and freedom.
