A free verse about miscommunication between two very passionate people.
IMPASSE’

There didn’t seem to be much left to talk about.

He didn’t want her to go.

She didn’t want to stay, at least not like this.

Neither would confess their true thoughts or feelings.

It was an endless circle of miscommunication and had been for months.

It had all started so simply, just a mere insinuation.

Comical in a way.

Then, without hardly a moments notice it took a severe turn to the left.

Words were said that certainly couldn’t be taken back.

The volume of their voices escalated and suddenly she bolted toward the door,

grabbing her purse and keys on the way out.

The door slammed shut.

He stood in the middle of a deafeningly silent room…. alone.

His pride was not allowing him to open that door.

To scream loudly for her to please come back

and most certainly not for him to run after her.

The sound of tires squealing and gravel been thrown

in all directions filled his head.

She was stubborn and was tired of him being so critical.

She told herself that this was the last time this argument would happen.

Speeding down the winding road not thinking of the consequences.

Angry and still not willing to give in. she drove on.

Suddenly the car lurched forward a few times and

then just died there on the side of the road.

She slammed her fist on the wheel, cursing at herself

for letting things get so far out of control.

Stomping back toward the house, head down and purposeful

she kept thinking about what she would say to him once inside.

The speech was all planned.

Climbing the steps and turning the handle, she entered.

He stood there…. surprised to see her.

She cleared her throat, ready to let him know exactly how she felt.

“You forgot to fill the tank.”  she said as she threw her purse on the table.

He moved toward her slowly and wrapped his arms

around her waist and kissed her on the neck.

She pulled back and stared at him for a few moments…

suddenly the grin on her face gave her away.

He pulled her close again and whispered in her ear.

“And, you still forgot to put the cap on the toothpaste.”

He tickled her ribs and she gave him a solid punch in the arm.

She walked across the room…….turned and faced him.

“So, I guess we’re even then?”
