When someone dies, who listens?
“Where am I? What happened? I…I…remember someone screaming and then…”

Silence the moment her gaze fell on the shredded torso dumped in a farmer’s field beneath a pile of junk. Tiny grains of sand glittered where they stuck to the gore, blood and bone protruding from it, as if highlighting the spectacular way in which this woman died. Gawkers gathered, but heard nothing.

“Wait! Who is she? Help! Can’t anyone hear me?”

Red hair…butterfly earring torn away…mole behind the right ear.

“NOOOOOOOO! It can’t be! It can't!“

Another appeared. “I hear you,” said the Reaper, “and it’s why I’m here.”
