A flag waves above each granite marker,
Indicating a soldier's sacrifice,
Taps echo through the cemetery,
Today we recount freedom's price.
Each person present remembers someone,
Friend or kin who marched off to war,
Man or woman who died on a battlefield,
Whose spirit now with angels soar.
As we watch Memorial Day ceremonies,
Let us take the time to speak the names,
Of those whose bones lie beneath granite headstones,
They want their memories to live, but not their fame.
