A slam poem about differences
I know that we are all different.
But somehow, we all seem to suffer from an ailment.
We are all strong, but we lie dormant.
We embrace not difference, but fear.
If we could all just take a moment it could be so clear
that everything in this world is not really so dire
but rather that everyone shares the same desires
we all share a fire within our hearts that never tires
never rewires, never expires. We all aspire
to acquire enough to form our empire- but that requires
that we perspire to admire the products- that we misfire
until we retire for our dreams to transpire.
We can stand alone, or we can stand together.
We have to break down the walls between us and sever
the curtains that obscure one another from the truth
that we are no different from our youth
we have to break down the barriers that divide us
because this affliction spreads through us like a virus
that we separate and segregate and close the gate
on those who are just like us, trying to find themselves.
Be the change you wish to see- only we can change ourselves
but the first steps to solving problems is admitting we have them-
from there our changes can stem
into a cure, into a solution, into a resolution.
But it will take nothing less than a revolution
to change the way that we think and the way that we express
our ideas and deepest regrets- we must repress the desire to regress
into a society of hatred and rejection.
We have to realize that each one of us is a perfection, not in need of inspection.
We don't realize our own impact we have on others.
We are all sisters and brothers and to feel one another's
hate can destroy each of us more than we can imagine.
Only we can stop our own actions.
Only we can make the change.
Today.
