Girl in high school who must deal with wicked, twisted, teachers. I Love Reviews. :)
This is a play I have written for a district Thespian Festival; which is a huge theater competition for actors. I received an excellent on the product below which is equivalent to an athlete’s/science fair second place award. The guide lines were to have a min. of 15 pages and a max. of 30 pages. The rules for what format to write this in were very ridiculous, confusing, and annoying, but, I managed to get all the margin, font, and spacing sizes correct. When I pasted it to this though it messed a lot of that up, for it was a weird format to begin with. The page length is on reason why it may need more added to it because I didn’t want to be disqualified.

ALISON enters into a room and turns on a light. She is wearing a woman’s suit. She crosses to a bed and sits on the edge of it. She then starts to nudge the body that lies under the covers.
ALISON:
Zinna, it’s time for you to wake up and go to school.
ZINNA rolls over in the bed.
ZINNA:
It’s not six o’clock yet…
ALISON:
Your alarm has gone off twice, and I’ve tried waking you up three times now. Oh, and it’s already six thirty.
ZINNA:
WHAT!?
ZINNA hops out of bed nearly pushing her mother over.
ZINNA:
Why didn’t you wake me!?
ZINNA runs to her closet and franticly starts to search for something to wear. ALISON just smiles and shakes her head.
ALISON:
Oh, Zinna, what would you do without me?
Pause.
ZINNA:
Playfully.
Sleep in.
ALISON laughs.

The Art of Torture Page 3
ALISON:
What was the painting you had to get done last night?
ZINNA:
It was the extreme emotion painting, and I’m really proud of it.
ZINNA pulls out an 18”x24” canvas with violin smashed and glued to it with a bunch of dark, angry colors thrown on it. ALISON looks at it in awe.
ALISON:
That’s…amazing. How did you do that?
ZINNA:
Well, I used that little violin decoration I had on my wall and some dark paint. Then I threw in some anger.
ALISON:
Wow. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that your father will be taking you to school today.
ZINNA:
Okay.
ELLIOT enters wearing a suit. ELLIOT jingles his car keys playfully at ZINNA.
ELLIOT:
Zinna? You ready?
ZINNA:
Yup, I’ll meet you outside.
ZINNA exits. ALISON turns to ELLIOT.
ALISON:
In a state of panic.
Can you talk to her on the way to school? She’s been acting really strange lately and when I look into her eyes, all I see is anger and sadness.

The Art of Torture Page 4
ELLIOT:
Yeah, I’ll talk to her. Do you think it’s from this whole situation with her art teacher?
ALISON:
Yeah.
ELLIOT:
Sighs sadly.
I’ve got to go; I’ll talk to her on the way. Bye, hon.
ELLIOT kisses ALISON and exits. Blackout.
ZINNA and ELLIOT are in a car.
ELLIOT:
Zinna, how have you been handling your art teacher lately?
ZINNA:
Um…Fine.
ELLIOT:
Are you sure?
ZINNA:
Well…I’ve been handling the same as I was from day one.
ELLIOT:
How’s that?
ZINNA:
I do everything she says, I turn everything in on time, unlike everyone else, and I still get these unfair grades and comments.
ELLIOT:
Are you sure it’s not just her way of teaching?
ZINNA:
Dad, I’m telling you the truth.

The Art of Torture Page 5
ELLIOT:
Okay, I believe you. How about we have a teacher conference with her and the principal and see if we can get this straightened out?
ZINNA:
Alright.
ELLIOT:
Okay then, tell Mr. Pomidorstien, whenever you see him that I am requesting a conference with him and your art teacher after school.
ZINNA:
Okay.
ELLIOT:
Now go show Mrs. Sa-tan what you’re made of!
ZINNA:
Dad! It’s German, so it’s pronounced Za-ton.
ELLIOT:
Same thing; I love you, have a good day.
ZINNA:
Love you too; bye!
Blackout. When lights go up MRS. SATAN will be onstage looking at one of the three following finger paintings on a canvas on easels a little house with a sun, a stick figure of a football player, and a flower. They all are painted very poorly. MRS. SATAN wears flip flops, dirty jeans, a dirty shirt, an apron covered in paint, and glasses. There will be one empty easel.
MRS. SATAN:
The colors in this are unique, A-plus. This detail is good. A-plus. I feel like I’m actually there! A-plus plus.
ZINNA enters.
The Art of Torture Page 6
ZINNA:
Mrs. Satan?
MRS. SATAN gasps.
MRS. SATAN:
Oh, you scared me.
ZINNA:
Sorry. I have my extreme emotion painting that is due today, where do you want it?
MRS. SATAN:
Sweetly.
Just put it on your easel and I’ll grade it in a minute.
ZINNA:
Alright.
Enter AMY, KATY, and BECKY. MRS. SATAN crosses to her desk. BECKY has a southern accent.
AMY:
I got like an A-plus plus on my picture of Ricky! I can’t wait to tell him.
BECKY:
The house I drew was like certainly an A-plus!
KATY:
My precious sun flower was like very hard to paint.
Bell rings.
MRS. SATAN:
Okay, class, your extreme emotion paintings are due today so place them on your easel, and your assignment for today is to sketch a human skull.

The Art of Torture Page 7
AMY:
But Mrs. Satan we didn’t get to like finish our paintings because we’ve had like cheerleading practices till like three in the morning.
KATY/BECKY:
Like, yeah.
ZINNA:
Excuse me, Mrs. Satan, but this was the same excuse they had for the still life painting, that they turned in late and still got A’s on.
MRS. SATAN:
Zinna, they are cheer-leaders, so creativity comes to them easier than to the average student like you. Just try working hard like them
AMY, KATY, BECKY start to giggle.
ZINNA:
I get they’re cheerleaders. They say ‘like’ every other word. But…
MR. POMIDORSTEIN enters.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Mrs. Satan, I want to congratulate you on all the volunteer hours you have gotten from the parents of your wonderful students!
MR. POMIDORSTEIN kisses MRS. SATAN’S hand.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
You are quite the charmer.
MRS. SATAN:
Flirtatiously.
Oh, it’s nothing really, Mr. Principal.

The Art of Torture Page 8
ZINNA:
I need to talk to Mr. Pomidorstein for a minute. Is that alright, Mrs. Satan?
MRS. SATAN:
Yes, dear, I’ll grade your painting while you’re out.
ZINNA and MR. POMIDORSTEIN step to the side away from MRS. SATAN. MRS. SATAN will hear the conversation anyway.
ZINNA:
My parents are requesting to have meeting with you and Mrs. Satan.
MRS. SATAN writes and speaks the grade in a nonchalant tone.
MRS. SATAN:
F.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
When dear?
ZINNA:
After school.
MRS. SATAN:
Sad Face.
The sad face is drawn on the painting. MR. POMIDORSTEIN pulls out a planner and scribbles in it.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
It has been scheduled. Good-day Mrs. Satan, and keep getting those volunteers for your art club.
MRS. SATAN:
Oh I will! Ta ta!
MR. POMIDORSTEIN exits. ZINNA walks over and looks at her painting.
The Art of Torture Page 9
ZINNA:
What? I got an F?
Pause.
ZINNA:
Is that a sad face?
MRS. SATAN:
Your painting got an F and a sad face because it seemed to lack the emotional content that I was looking for and that was a big portion of your grade.
Bell Rings.
MRS. SATAN:
Well, that’s all for today. Bye kids, I’ll see you all after school today.
Enter RICKY, JOSH, and JERRY. They all wear matching letterman jackets.
AMY:
AMY winks, seductively.
Ricky! I like got an A on you.
AMY giggles. RICKY and AMY kiss.
RICKY:
I knew you would. Say, how about we skip math, and lunch to celebrate? I got new seats in my car.
AMY:
Then like what are we waiting for? Let’s go big boy.
AMY and RICKY exit. BECKY goes to kiss JOSH hello but JOSH interrupts her.
JOSH:
Becky, I’m hungry.
BECKY:
Ugh! You’re like always hungry. Let’s go.
The Art of Torture Page 10
BECKY grabs JOSH’S ear and exits. KATY turns to JERRY who is texting with a huge smile on his face.
KATY:
Who are you texting?
JERRY:
My mom. And she’s getting me a pink tie for homecoming!
JERRY grabs KATY’S hand and skips while they exit. JACK enters carrying a book.
JACK:
Zinna, I got that Greek gods book that you needed for that research-
JACK is cut off by MRS. SATAN gasping.
MRS. SATAN:
No boyfriends are allowed in my classroom.
ZINNA:
He is my best-friend, not my boyfriend, and the three cheerleaders just…
MRS. SATAN:
Zinna. Just leave.
Blackout. ZINNA and JACK stay on stage to share their lunch break. JACK eats a burger while ZINNA sketches in her sketchbook and occasionally munches on a granola bar.
ZINNA:
Jack, I feel like I should just give up on art and music and just become a doctor or something.
JACK:
Why?

The Art of Torture Page 11
ZINNA:
Sadly.
Because all I seem to get in art are F’s and I just feel like everything I do here is never good enough. I’m just a failure at what I love doing.
JACK:
Zinna, you aren’t a failure. You’re the best artist in that class and you shouldn’t let the jealous people get to you.
ZINNA stares at JACK. Jack takes her hand.
JACK:
I meant what I said and, if you need my help through this, I’m here.
ZINNA nods yes, Blackout. When lights come back up there will be a band room setting. MR. POMIDORSTEIN holds a conductor’s wand and is standing at a podium with music on it.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Okay class, that is all for today. The rest of the time is yours. Zinna, I need to talk to you in my office.
ZINNA gathers her things and walks across the stage to MR. POMIDORSTEIN’S office.
Zinna:
You wanted me?
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Yes, sit down. Do want anything to eat or drink? Like these donuts and coffee?
ZINNA:
No, thanks. What did you want me for?
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Oh, right. I looked at your grades, and I saw that you seem to be struggling in art.
The Art of Torture Page 12
ZINNA:
Yeah.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
So, I was wondering if you would like to replace it?
ZINNA:
I appreciate the offer, but I’m not changing. Oh, and unlike your assemblies you can’t bribe me or my parents with food like everybody else in town.
Bell rings.
ZINNA:
My parents should be here soon, and I need to meet them. See you in a few minutes.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
See you then, dear.
ZINNA exits. Soon after MRS. SATAN enters.
MRS. SATAN:
So…did she agree to quit?
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Angrily.
No, the food didn’t work.
MRS. SATAN:
But that usually always works. Wait. Does this mean we get to…?
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Maybe, we still have to see if her parents accept.
Enter ALISON, ELLIOT, and ZINNA.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Apolloson, please have a seat.

The Art of Torture Page 13
ELLIOT:
Let’s get down to business. We feel that our daughter is not getting the proper treatment. Meaning she is being treated unfairly by Mrs. Satan.
MRS. SATAN:
That is not true. I treat all of my students fairly.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Before this gets too out of hand, I have a proposition for you both.
ALISON:
What would that be?
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
How about we have your daughter changed out from the class? She is struggling and maybe a different class would suit her better.
ALISON:
But she doesn’t want a different class.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Mrs. Satan’s grading style maybe too hard for her though, and what you think is unfairness is just her method of teaching.
ELLIOT:
But it is unfair; what she got on that painting today was uncalled for and very immature. A sad face-really.
MRS. SATAN:
Look, if you just change her schedule to where she doesn’t have me anymore it would be easier for both of you.
ALISON looks at a paper.
ALISON:
Is this the request form to change her class?
MRS. SATAN:
Yes, we just need her or you to request the change. Don’t you want what’s best for your daughter?
The Art of Torture Page 14
ZINNA:
Mr. Pomidorstein tried to get me to change my classes earlier; I said no though.
ELLIOT:
Then we won’t change them either.
MRS. SATAN:
Sweetly.
Mrs. Apolloson don’t you just feel overwhelmed, sad, and angry with this whole mess? Don’t you just want the pain to end for your family? This can end it all, right here and now.
ALISON:
No, pain?
MRS. SATAN places her hand on ALISON’S shoulder.
MRS. SATAN:
No pain.
ALISON looks at the paper like she is in a trance. MRS. SATAN turns to ELLIOT and places a gentle hand on his shoulder.
MRS. SATAN:
Mr. Apolloson, don’t you want to be happy again. Don’t you want to see your wife and daughter happy again?
ELLIOT is in a deep trance now.
ELLIOT:
It might be a good idea to change her classes.
ZINNA:
Dad, you just said you weren’t going to change them.
ALISON:
Maybe it would be better to change her classes?
ALISON then suddenly snaps out of the trance.
The Art of Torture Page 15 ALISON:
Wait, no. What am I thinking?
ELLIOT then snaps out of it.
ELLIOT:
Oh, yeah, that’s right. Sorry, Zinna.
ZINNA:
What do you mean sorry? You almost-
ZINNA is quickly cut off by MR. POMIDORSTIEN.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Is there anything else you wanted to address, while we are here?
ALISON:
Actually, yes, Mrs. Satan, what is your problem? All you do is try to tear Zinna apart. Is it because she has the potential to be something more than you could ever be? All I ever see you do is bribe parents into doing work for you and buy things you need. I never see you get up off that behind of yours except to go get food. Now my real question is: what do you get out of all these volunteers? There has to be something in it for you and Points to MR. POMIDORSTIEN him because you both are always pushing and bribing people to volunteer, so what is it can you tell me? It’s been bothering me for a while now.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
This meeting is officially over. Good day, Mr. and Mrs. Apolloson.
ELLIOT:
I couldn’t have said it better. Let’s go, Zinna.
MRS. SATAN:
She still has art club today. She has to finish her assignments.
ZINNA:
I already did everything that was due for today.

The Art of Torture Page 16
MRS. SATAN:
You have to clean all the paint brushes cause it counts for a grade.
ALISON:
Let’s just go.
ALISON, ELLIOT, and ZINNA exit.
MRS. SATAN:
So, should I get the supplies ready?
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Yes. I’ll set up downstairs. Take her after art club.
MRS. SATAN:
Gladly. You don’t know how long I’ve waited for this.
MRS. SATAN exits. MR. POMIDORSTEIN opens a secret entrance and exits through it. Blackout. Lights up, ZINNA is washing paint brushes and MRS. SATAN enters.
MRS. SATAN:
You can stop washing those, now. Everyone has left.
ZINNA:
Is it seven already?
MRS. SATAN:
No, I let everyone out early.
Pause.
MRS. SATAN:
Except you.
ZINNA:
What?

The Art of Torture Page 17
MRS. SATAN pulls out a rag and covers ZINNA’S mouth with it. ZINNA attempts screaming.
MRS. SATAN:
I’ve waited so long for this!
ZINNA passes out and falls to the floor. MRS. SATAN drags ZINNA across the floor as she exits. Blackout. Lights up ZINNA is chained. A few feet away from Zinna is what appears to be a rolling hospital tray with assorted knifes, bottles of acids, and non-power tools. From the shadows, MR. POMIDORSTEIN enters, laughing evilly.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Hello, Zinna, and welcome to my chamber.
ZINNA:
Where am I?
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Under the school and you’re here because you don’t know how to just simply give up your dreams or save yourself from misery. So until you truly give up on your dreams of art and music, we will use these tools to cause physical pain to you.
ZINNA:
Panicked.
No! Why me?!
MRS. SATAN enters from the shadows pushing a cart of assorted power tools.
MRS. SATAN:
Because, your art really is better than mine. I used to be just like you. I had all the talent and passion in the world for art. But one day, I went out into the city and found out that my passion and talent meant nothing. My work was worth nothing, and I was torn apart because of this. Until one day a man came to me. He was a simple man, but what he offered me was everything that I could have asked for. The deal was, if I did everything that he told me to do that I will be able to take all the

MRS. SATAN:

revenge I wanted, on all of the people who are better than me. So you see, if you have the potential to go very far with it and I couldn’t have that, then neither can you.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
I was offered the same deal, when Mrs. Satan, came here. At first I didn’t believe what I was being offered, but then I thought about all the times my music was ridiculed. So, I accepted and now the both of us work together. Now, if these tools don’t work to break you, then we will use these power tools. This can be short and painless or long and painful. Which would you prefer?
Pause.
ZINNA:
Do what you want, but I won’t give up what I love.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Long and painful it is. Mrs. Satan, would you do the honors?
MRS. SATAN:
I’d love to!
MRS. SATAN takes a knife and stabs it in ZINNA’S left forearm. ZINNA screams in pain.
MRS. SATAN:
Ah, such a great feeling, isn’t it!?
Blackout. This blackout will be longer than usual for it will have audio sounds of stabbing, slicing, and hitting also including the laughter of MRS. SATAN and MR. POMIDORSTEIN, with ZINNA screaming. When lights go up there will be ELLIOT, ALISON, and JACK onstage.

The Art of Torture Page 19
ALISON:
Crying.
Where is my daughter?
ELLIOT:
We’ll find her.
ALISON:
But if she isn’t here where else could she be?
JACK:
Did you try calling the cops?
ALISON:
Calmer.
We did, but a person isn’t missing until twenty four hours.
JACK gets his cell phone.
JACK:
One of the cheerleaders actually wanted me to help her study over the phone, so I have her number. Do you want me to call her and see if she knows where Zinna is?
ELLIOT:
Yes. Put it on speaker.
JACK dials the number. They wait as it rings a few times.
JACK:
Hey, Katy? This is Jack.
KATY:
What do you want, dweeb? I’m at a party.
JACK:
Wait, shouldn’t you be at cheerleading practice?

The Art of Torture Page 20
ELLIOT:
Harshly whispers.
Get on with it.
KATY:
That was so we could get out of painting. Now what do you want, loser?
JACK:
Have you seen Zinna anywhere?
KATY:
The last time I saw her was at art club. Mrs. Satan let us out at six and said she was going to get her and tell her to go home. I haven’t seen the twerp since.
JACK:
Okay, thanks, Katy.
KATY:
Whatever, bye.
ALISON:
What a brat.
ELLIOT:
Agreed.
JACK:
Didn’t you say you went to pick her up at seven, and Mrs. Satan was there and said she just left?
ALISON:
Yes, why?
JACK:
How could she have just left if she was let out at six?
ELLIOT:
That’s a good point, Jack. Look, I’m sorry we bothered you, but we’ll go and pester the cops at the station anyway.
The Art of Torture Page 21
JACK:
It’s okay. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.
ALISON:
Thank you, Jack.
JACK:
Anything for you and Zinna.
ELLIOT and ALISON exit.
JACK:
To himself and in distress.
Where are you, Zinna? I have a bad feeling. God, where is she!
OLIVIA appears.
OLIVIA:
Looks like I’m right on time.
JACK jumps. Then sees OLIVIA.
JACK:
Who are you and what are you doing in my house?
OLIVIA:
Cool it. I’m the answer to your prayer. My name is Olivia and I’m Zinna’s angel.
JACK:
Wait, like a guardian angel? Yeah, right.
OLIVIA:
Something like that and you better believe it because she needs your help immediately.
JACK:
You know where she is?
OLIVIA:
Yes, there’s a secret passage in the principal’s office, behind his book shelf. It’ll open when you pull out the Beowulf book. Zinnia’s at the end of the passage. Call the cops and go now.
The Art of Torture Page 22
JACK:
Okay, thanks.
OLIVIA:
Thank God, not me. Now go!
Blackout. Lights up back in the chamber with ZINNA suffering from cuts, bruises, and minor stabs.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
So, do you want to be an artist?
ZINNA:
Yes.
MRS. SATAN:
This one just won’t crack.
ZINNA:
I’ll…never give up…my dreams…hopes…or my…b-beliefs.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Time for the power tools. Let’s start with the…angle grinder!
MRS. SATAN:
All of this has built me up an appetite. How about we go eat something and then come back and continue?
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
You know what, I agree. Let’s clean up, eat, and come back. Here drink this water, Zinna; it’ll ease the pain till we return. We don’t want you to die…Yet!
MR. POMIDORSTEIN and MRS. SATAN exit the shadows laughing. OLIVIA appears next to ZINNA.
OLIVIA:
Zinna. Zinna? Zinna!
ZINNA:
Uh, what? Who?
The Art of Torture Page 23
OLIVIA:
Hush, save your strength. I’m Olivia; I’m one of your guardian angels.
ZINNA:
Guardian angel?
OLIVIA:
I am the angel of the night, and I have been watching you for quite some time. Why? Well you happen to be one of my assignments from God. You always interested me too, that’s why he gave me the job to keep you alive. I have help on the way for you, so don’t worry.
ZINNA:
I’m sorry but…I must give up.
OLIVIA:
Zinna, you can’t give up. You’re needed. You can’t let this stop you.
ZINNA:
I have to…for everyone’s sake.
OLIVIA:
No, life may throw at you the darkest things to try and break you, but that is the beauty of living. Being able to have or gain the strength to get back up and keep fighting. This Mrs. Satan and Mr. Pomidorstein may have gotten hundreds of people to sign the devil’s contract even if they didn’t know it, but you are the only one who can stop her. Even if it takes years before vengeance is repaid, it all ends here for her-You see that light from that window; that is the full moon guiding you out of the darkness; follow it unlike the others who fail to.
OLIVIA disappears. JACK emerges from the darkness with a light in hand.
JACK:
Zinna! Oh dear God! Who did this to you? Is there a key somewhere?
ZINNA:
They have it. Use…the angle…grinder.
The Art of Torture Page 24
JACK takes the grinder and cuts ZINNA out of her chains.
JACK:
When I find-
MR. POMIDORSTEIN and MRS. SATAN enter from the shadows cutting JACK off.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Look who decided to join the party.
MRS. SATAN:
And rescue their little girl-friend. Oh, isn’t it sickening.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN and MRS. SATAN pull out guns.
MR. POMIDORSTEIN:
Very.
JACK:
You know I called the cops. You’ll be arrested and put in jail for this!
MRS. SATAN:
Frankly, we don’t care. We just want her soul.
ZINNA:
Then come and get it.
MRS. SATAN:
Oh, I will. Now, Pomidorstein!
MR. POMIDORSTEIN fires his gun twice at JACK but only one bullet hits JACK and the other back fires knocking out MR. POMIDORSTEIN.
ZINNA:
Jack!

The Art of Torture Page 25
MRS. SATAN:
Looking at MR. POMIDORSTEIN.
This is all your fault!
MRS. SATAN crosses to ZINNA to shoot her in the head, but ZINNA defends herself and struggles with MRS. SATAN. ZINNA eventually disarms her and takes the gun.
ZINNA:
Give me one reason. Why I shouldn’t kill you!
OLIVIA comes to ZINNA’S side.
OLIVIA:
Kill her and you’ll become her. Vengeance is not yours to take.
MRS. SATAN:
Kill me! That’s what life is about: revenge! Now take it!
OLIVIA:
No, it’s not. Listen to your heart.
Police sirens are heard.
ZINNA:
I should kill you, you deserve it. But I’m better than you.
ZINNA throws the gun away.
MRS. SATAN:
You’re a weak, pathetic-
ZINNA knocks out MRS. SATAN, cutting her off. ZINNA rushes to JACK’S side.
ZINNA:
Jack! Please, don’t give up on me, not now.
JACK:
Zinna, I love you.

The Art of Torture Page 26
ZINNA:
I love you, too.
ZINNA kisses him.
ZINNA:
Jack? Jack? No, no. He’s gone…he’s gone. You’re an angel; can’t you fix him? Bring him back?!
OLIVIA:
I’m sorry, Zinna, but that is not my area, and I can’t change his destiny. Don’t worry they will get what they deserve.
Banging, cops, and cop radios are heard in the darkness causing an eerie echo in the chamber.
Curtain.
