Two souls brought back together, forever bound by fate |
Life is always unexpected. A minute ago, they expected an afternoon of solitude. A breezy afternoon with a cup of hot chocolate, their iPods and a good read. Fate intervened. Everything blurred. They saw only each other. Emotions stirred. Eyes of emerald stung by tears, Elle’s lips quivered, not believing what she is seeing. ‘Clay….’ Clay stood, his jaws dropped. No words said, his body moved on it’s on accord. Moving across the tables towards the counter where she stood. He embraced her. She sobbed uncontrollably. ‘I thought I’d never see you again.’ Clay cupped Elle’s chin, raising it up slightly, and gave her a kiss. Onlookers cheered and clap, as did the staff working for the chocolatier. Elle buried her head in Clay’s chest, crying and smiling. The Sydney skyline was blue, sun shining, a good weather. It’s as if the heavens are smiling upon them. The day came, the 14th day of February. Clay, smartly dressed, a bouquet in his hand, sat and waited for Elle. He stood at the corner of the street, where they usually met for dates. Dates, he thought and smiled, recalling those moments of bliss. ‘Clay?’ Thoughts abandoned, Clay looked up. Dressed in a figure hugging dress the color of her eyes, Elle looks stunning. Clay stood there, struck. Elle pouted. ‘It’s not polite to stare at a girl like that.’ Clay laughed and blushed, scratching his head. ‘Well, it’s because the girl is the cutest girl in town.’ Elle’s turn to blush now, trying hard to suppress a smile. No candlelight dinner, no posh restaurants. They sat at the piers, looking at the night sky over Darling Harbor. In silence, they enjoyed each other’s presence. A night of serenity, warmth and a kiss from the one they love the most. The heavens poured, thunders roared and lightning flashed. Elle sneezed, sniffling. A pile of tissue was building up on her coffee table. A soft knock on the door, heard amidst the dull rolling thunder. Elle opened the door. Clay stood, water dripping, smiling. A tray of hot cocoa in his hand, and a single red rose on the tray. Sniffling still, she smiled her cute dimpled smile and blushed. As Clay dried himself, Elle sat on her couch, cocooned in her blanket. Smiling, she thought, sweet as ever. Clay came over and hugged and pecks her on the forehead. Thank God for such an angel, Elle thought as she snuggled into his arms. Clay is one who is never nervous, always calm and clinical. This is one of those rare moments that he was. The fire flickering, the night wind whispering. Elle came out from the tent in her singlet and track suit. Seeing Clay deep in thought, she snuck behind him and hugged him. ‘The great wyrms will submerge for years at a time, but none as deep as your thoughts, boy.’ Elle giggled, seeing Clay’s surprised look. ‘Chapter Master, err, I mean Elle!’ ‘I read your book, nice read too. Proud of me?’ Clay cheekily stuck his tongue out. ‘So what’s bothering you?’ Clay sighed. Now or never, eh? He pecks her on the cheek and sat face to face with her. Clay fished out a tiny velvet box from his pocket. Elle froze. No. It isn’t. Is it? Clay took a deep breath and before he began to mutter a single word, Elle shushed him. No words were said. Silence was all they need. Words would taint the purity of this moment. Elle slowly moved towards Clay, her arms around him. Their lips connect. Neither did it part for a while. A wordless ‘yes’ As fate would have it. The red threads of two souls. Two unlikely individuals. Now bound by love. By the hands of fate.
