There are perks to having a step family
"Leave it be already, not like I saw fireworks or anything," Loki complained idly and waved her hand.

"But you admit it happened?" Myke asked hopefully.

Loki looked at her plate of beef hot dogs, picked one up, and shoved it into his mouth. Boys could be so damn overbearing. You give them one kiss and supposedly its a declaration of love or something.

He gobbled the morsel up quickly and managed to maintain the intended silence when his mouth was empty. The splintered porch entered a peaceful silence once again. It was abruptly interrupted with the sweet scent of baked goods.

Loki sniffed the air, tracing the delicious smell to its source. In the doorway stood her father and Myke's step father, Mr. Rique Givena Sr. He was holding onto a small paper plate holding a half eaten slice of apple pie. He had a dribble of apple spice sliding down the front of his work shirt. His collar and tie were astray to accommodate for the extra heat of the pie.

"You better get in there quick, don't think Rique can hold out for you two," he spoke through mouthfuls. There wasn't much that could tear him from his study and baked goods was part of that short list.

Loki scrambled to her feet and hurried inside, understanding too well her twin brother's weakness for sweets. Like father like son. She couldn't deny the woman's skill for cooking even if she would spend the rest of her life denying the woman was her stepmother.

There was a parade of feet filing into the kitchen. Loki took interference from her brother who was already trying to charm his way into a third piece. The twins' father was sneaking his way to a large second and Myke came up on the rear, trying to weave through the crowd. It was a typical Sunday evening with more noise filling the small house than positively necessary.

"Whoa, whoa now! I know I'm good but this is just too flattering." Mrs. Givena eyed the faces of her relations and barely contained her amusement. Her face puffed up, holding in a monumental laugh. Everyone else held their breath, grinning and waiting for the climax. Finally, it erupted into a terrible cackle, in such contrast to her starlet beauty. It wasn't so much the moment as her completely terrible laugh that had everyone clutching their stomachs, gasping for air. The woman found everything uncontrollably funny and in turn was something to laugh at herself.

As the dust settled and the final gasps were inhaled, they found but a fraction of the pie remaining. All eyes turned to each other. Who was going clean up the mess? Mrs. Givena was exempt because she cooked. That left the four not-so-home-bodies to decide a volunteer.

Mr. Givena stretched exaggeratedly and turned away. "Well I still have a mountain of paper work."

"Hey, is that my phone. I need to finish up that car to give it back to my pal. Ya know, tech doesn't fix itself," Rique said as he side stepped towards the garage to work on the old blue convertible that had been sitting for at least a month.

Now remained Myke and Loki, both with no spectacular excuse to summon for the occasion. Mrs. Givena smirked and wiped her hands on a dish towel. "I'll let you two duke it out, but when I get back I wanna see a clean kitchen." She walked out of the kitchen, chuckling her way out.

Once she was gone Loki turned and began for the front door, saying not a single word.

"Where are you going?" Myke demanded.

She turned around slowly, switching her hips harder than her tomboyish antics would normally allow."I believe I have a swimming hole with my name on it. Literally."

"That has nothing to do with anything!"

"Oh, but I believe it does." She inched her way to him.

"We settle this fair and--mmph! Mmm.."

She locked her lips upon his and leaned on him, pressing him against the table. They stayed tangled for eons, threatening oxygen deprivation. Myke was happy to oblige such a sugary death. She pulled away after some time, her eyes locked onto his own dreary, weakened green ones. "Yes, that did just happen," she whispered in his ear. Still, captivated in the moment she escaped without further questioning.

Mrs. Givena returned, knowing what to expect. Myke was leaning over a sink full of dishes, grinning at the suds like a content fool. She saw no reason to address him, he seemed pleased enough with his own delusions.
