(In honor of those with Alzheimer’s/Dementia and their families)
~The Awakening~
I sit and I stare
No longer aware
Of the woman I use to be
I play with the band upon my hand
Not knowing who gave it to me
And then one day it happens
My mind becomes crystal clear
It is as if I am awakening
I become consumed with fear
“Where is my husband?”
“Why isn’t he here?”
“Please find my children?”
“Before I disappear”
I grab a pen and paper
All their names I begin to write
I feel the void approaching
I’m slowly losing the fight
“I love you all so dearly.”
“I wish that I could stay”
“I want you to know, I’m not suffering”
“My reality has no pain”
“Please remember that I love you”
“And in my heart you will remain”
“Now I must be going”
“For my mind is slipping away”
I sit and I stare
No longer aware
Of the woman I use to be
I play with the band
Upon my hand
Not knowing who gave it to me…
Inspired by those touched by
Alzheimer’s and Dementia
