This is a piece I wrote some time back describing some colourful dreams I'd been having.
Dreams- intriguing happenings they are. Now at the start I must mention I haven’t read extensively about dreams and their interpretations.

Lately, I have been experiencing vivid dreams with brilliant “special effects”. Before writing this post, I have had a few.

The three about an angelic girl that I met in my dream world, once in a train, another time in a strange fortress-meets-my old school-meets-Great Wall of China kind of strange place, and the third time I don’t quite remember.

One where I saw what I believe was The End of the World as experienced by me in my college campus: furious bright light streams coming down from skies above and destroying the college campus while people ran around looking for cover. Before these narrow, destructive streams of light had started coming down (a la those sent down by aliens in movies like Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, only more colourful), the skies had turned a magnificent colour of dark blue, and then to the awe of the young college audience, a beautiful play of vibrant colours ensued, sadly to culminate into a powerful beam of light striking out the little Nescafe kiosk from the map of the college, and the earth. A violent attack followed. I ran for my life like everyone else but meanwhile managed to attend a phonecall from my parents asking if I was alright and if these attacks were happening in my part of the world as well. Interestingly in the dream I could actually see the faces of my dad (talking to me) and my mother laying by his side in the bed, listening anxiously to the conversation. You can say I had a split screen view of myself fielding fireballs from the sky on one side and that of my parents lying in bed under a white sheet talking to me on mobile phone, on the other side. Now, all dreams come to an end. Even the ones with special effects. Even the weirdest of them all. This one I count among the magnificently weird ones. It ended with the camera panning down in my parents’ part of the ‘split-screen’, revealing to me that there was nothing left of them except the faces I was talking to! End of dream. And so… I came back to reality: in shock, sweating heavily and panting. (I must mention here that the dream was marijuana induced).

But on the night of 29th March 2012, when I was sleeping at a friend’s place in Daman, came this remarkable dream that finally made me realise that I might be having really special dreams and must document them. This one too, was special effects galore. I only have a faint memory of where it started but clearly remember the ‘final dramatic sequence’. What intrigued me was the recurrence of beams of light from the sky (what is this after all?). This time I hadn’t had any weed. Just a can of Kingfisher Light a couple of hours before going to sleep. Now that can’t be ‘dream inducing’! Moreover, I woke up in shock from the dream at about six in the morning. Now, the dream: A vast sea surrounded a ship that I was on. The crystal white ship in the backdrop of an almost black coloured water in the ocean, a glum, grey sky, strong winds whistling in my ear- the eerie atmosphere gave me a feeling that something strange was imminent. I know for sure I had been dreaming long but only remember this last part. My father was with me on the ship. So were a few other unrecognisable people. Similar to the previous ‘End of the World’ dream, the skies started getting mischievious first. In no time it got extremely dark and my dream world became black and white. Soon, a huge, black, saucer-shaped flying object appeared out of nowhere in the skies, a little away from where the white ship was. I was startled. The ‘spaceship’ then, sent such a sharp white stream down in the sea that it changed the whole ‘B&W’ flavoured dream into a bright white screen display for a few seconds that instantly made me shut my eyes lest they burn and I lose sight. After a while as I opened my eyes, I could see waves originating from the point where the beam had pierced the ocean and coming towards the ship. But these were just gentle waves, not threatening to destabalise or capsize the vessel. Instinctively, I looked at father. Just one glimpse at him and I had a feeling that he was pretending to be unaware of whatever had happened in the last few seconds. However, I ventured, “Papa, what was that!”. “Nothing happened”, came the reply. I felt the voice was that of a father trying to play ignorant in front of his child, trying to make him believe that all that had happened was nothing but the child’s flight of fancy. But, you know what? It was real! I am sure even he’d seen it! The dream ended there. Earlier in the day: I had been to the Jampore beach so obviously I had seen the vast ocean, also a few little boats at the ‘Jetty’. But of course no spaceship, no beams of light. As hard as I may try to make sense of my vivid dreams, there can be a million explanations and interpretations. More importantly, the sheer thrill and experience and the HD action that they offer me (the central character!) at no cost at all is the reason I want them to continue and make me reflect on their meaning. They’re so real! These dreams.
