Failed trust

I tried to hold on thinking that one day the waves of pain would stop crashing down on my heart. I kept waiting for you to throw something that I could hold on to even if it was just for one second. Drowning in confusion and misunderstanding you left me there without anything to hope for. I took one large breath in, holding it as long as I could. But, you took that too. My heart now a shattered half of what once was, and a love I didn't deserve, is what it left within me. The fire I once came to love deep inside my soul that you had placed there is now barely a spark. It flickers in the darkness where love once dwelt.
