what do you think before you fall asleep? |
last night i discovered i have 2 distinct sleep time habits and i am curious to know other peoples' nighttime mental routines. my #1 - on nights when i'm not stressed, agitated, excited or otherwise mind boggled i tend to 'daydream'. these are complex stories that play like a movie in my head. subject matter has included things like : discovering that i'm pregnant and the scene in which i tell my hubby (sometimes good outcomes, sometimes bad); my home or myself getting robbed, carjacked, attacked etc. i'm always a hero in these, with superior fighting skills. and yes, the hero always wins; someone close to me dying and my various reactions to the news. sometimes i'm discovering the death, sometimes being told of it. when i'm daydreaming like this i try to really live the moments and feelings. i envelop myself in the scenario as though i'm in the moment. sleep usually comes before the conclusion of the daydream, and more often than not i never really know how the story ends. my #2 - when i've got something on my mind that's getting all of my mental attention, good or bad, i find that my mind wanders in the pre sleep stage. it's like an ever-changing high speed car chase where my conscious is trying to keep up with my sub conscious. i'll have a musical soundtrack playing behind random thoughts of people, issues, memories, tv, news, my day, my hubby; and all of this is within seconds. it feels like full and complete thoughts on many topics all at the same time. this type of brain activity tends to accentuate the stress of whatever was on my mind and i find these are nights i can't sleep. i may be exhausted but the electrical energy coursing through my brain is enough to keep me awake all night. so, i'm wondering what going on in your head in the time just before you fall asleep. |
