Writing Challenge: put your least favourite character in a scene that would drive him mad. |
God, how much I hate this town. Demons everywhere, in disguise, killing people, seducing them. And I'm not even mentioning the people that live here. Of course the only reason that I'm here is that my folks and younger brother live here. His twinsister and I moved out two years ago. I couldn't let her live in danger. Why I didn't bring my brother with us? Because he's a 'chosen one'. Damn, I hate that word. Chosen one, my ass. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard: Every generation there are a boy and a girl They have to prefend that the devil comes back to earth, and changes it in hell.So my brother refused to go with us, because he had a 'duty'. A duty! Can you believe it? Well, I can't. Two teenagers fighting demons, saving the world... Of course there is only one person to blame: Egbert. Yeah, I don't like him. At all. He ruined my little bro's life, and on top that the life of his own goddaughter. He's training them, teaching them all about demons and the devil, preparing them for the fight against the devil. I parked my car in front of my parents house and got out of the car. I looked around. It was quiet, too quiet. I hesitanly walked to the door. It felt like someone was watching me. At the same moment I rang the door bell, someone screamed and jumped on my back. ''What the-!'' The woman tried to stab me with a stake. ''What the hell are you doing?'' As soon as I said that, she got off me. ''Oh my God,'' she said. ''I'm so sorry! I thought you were something- ehm, I mean, someone else.'' I looked at her in disbelieve. She was kind of small, with blond, short hair. She didn't look that strong, though I knew different know. ''Did you just say something?'' The woman's eyes became big. She looked around quickly. ''No,'' she laughed. '' 'Course not!'' I opened my mouth, when someone screamed: ''Elicia?'' The woman looked behind me in relief. ''Oh Damien, thank God! This creep here was about to break into your house!'' Creep? You're the one who attacked me. My younger brother walked towards us. It took him sometime to recognise me, though it wasn't that long that we've seen each other. ''Keith? What are you doing here?'' The woman named Elicia looked at me curiously. ''Hey little bro,'' I said, while patting my brothers head. ''So, you planned this welcome comittee?'' Damien shook his head. He looked at Elicia, who shrugged. ''Just trying to protect your house.'' Damien looked at her sarcastically. ''Yeah, thanks.'' he said. Elicia smiled self-satisfied and left. ''And she is....?'' I asked, after I made sure she couldn't hear me. Damien shook his head and walked towards the door. ''Guardian in training.'' he answered, while he opened the door at the same time. Of course, a guardian in training. That explains why she's so insane. I followed my brother inside and looked around. It didn't change much, I noticed. ''So where are mom and dad?'' I asked. ''Amsterdam,'' Damien answered. ''To see some play.'' I nodded. Couldn't expect them to be home anyways. I didn't call them to say that I was going to visit. ''You're planning to spend the night here?'' Damien asked me. ''I guess,'' I smiled. ''You have to go to school tomorrow?'' Damien nodded hesitantly, like he knew what was coming. ''Then I can see Ashley again,'' I said. ''How's she?'' ''Great.'' Damien answered. He stood a bit uncomfortable, knowing that I was going to ask about Egbert too. And of course he did. ''He's fine.'' Damien said, but he left it at that. I decided to see so for myself the next day. So that's what I did. Around two o'clock I left the house and went to Hellburgh High, to meet Egbert. He wasn't surprised to see me, so Damien already knew I was coming. ''Keith,'' Egbert said coldly. ''How nice to see you again.'' Yeah yeah, quit the politeness already. ''Egbert.'' I said, and we shook hands. The doors of the library opened, and Damien and a girl walked in. Though she grew up a lot, I recognised her immediately: Ashley. ''Keith,'' Ashley said surprised, though I knew it was just an act. Why would Damien tell Egbert about me and not Ashley? ''How are you?'' she asked me, after we hugged. So Damien didn't tell her everything that happened in Akuma Toshi. That's so like him. ''Same old, same old.'' I told her with a smile. She smiled back at me. Sometimes I thought she was too nice for her own good. ''So, what brought you here?'' Egbert asked, trying to sound interested. Fail. ''My folks and little bro of course.'' Egbert took of his glases, a habit of him that annoyed me a lot. I tried to ignore it. ''I mean here, the school library.'' Egbert explained. I shrugged. ''Just wanted to see how you were doing.'' Egbert put his glasses back on. ''Of course.'' He's seen through me. I knew it. But why should I care? As long as the kids didn't notice, I didn't give a damn. ''So, how do feel about tennis?'' I asked Egbert, who was reading a book. Probably looking up something about some demon. ''Excuse me?'' Of course. He forgot. We use to play tennis all the time, so we could still compete, without arguing. Of course this was just because Damien and Ashley were little. They now knew we didn't like each other, but hey, I started to like tennis. ''Tennis.'' I repeated. ''Oh, of course,'' Egbert said, with fighting spirit in his eyes. ''Let's play tennis.'' I nodded approvingly. I'll beat you, old man! ''Let's double.'' I said, nodding at Damien and Ashley, who were both reading a book. ''Great idea.'' Egbert agreed. ''Damien.'' I said. ''Ashley.'' Egbert said. ''Let's double.'' we said at the same time. The two teenagers looked at us confused. ''Hah?'' The match lasted a few hours. I gave my best, Damien gave his best. But the old guy had won again. I fell down on my knees. Angry, depressed, defeated. ''Damien,'' I said. ''Next time I'm visiting, we'll definitely beat them!'' Damien rolled his eyes. ''Yeah, yeah,'' he said. ''Come on, I'm thirsty.'' He walked towards the canteen. I stood up and followed him. ''Don't worry, little bro! They may have won this time...'' I blattered on and on, how we would defeat them next time. But you know what? The next time I visited, I didn't even want to play tennis. Guess that's what they call growin' up huh? |
