inspired by the movie, Phonebooth, starring Keifer Sutherland.
The Ominous Phone call
I had never been threatened
Until he called me that one day.
He hung up just immediately,
But that didn’t take away

The fact that he had frightened me
With the simple call and its meaning.
It has kept me from resting completely,
And I wouldn’t call it ‘sleeping’.

His threat was  something ominous.
I can’t explain it in simple words.
But I’m sure it’s nothing you’ve experienced
At least in this universe.

Not every call has to be answered,
I learned that lesson that night.
And I keep my windows covered,
And I keep on the light…

He called me in the morning
Then he called me in the evening.
He called when I was mourning,
And then when I was praying.

I answered that phone
Wondering who it was.
I answered it quietly,
And he answered in return:

“Hello, my raining blossom,
Why do you cry in the night?
Why do you whisper prayer in the dark,
And not turn on your light?”

I don’t understand his question,
Though it’s all that I’ve done in the past;
How could he possibly be right though?
How could he…unless….

Has he spied on me since then,
Has he been lurking in the dark?
Who is this man on the telephone,
Where is he, wherefore thou art?

“You sound surprised,” he says smoothly,
“As if you didn’t know me.
Surely you must remember
A man by the name of Donnie.”

“I don’t remember you,” I tell him,
“Nor can I place your face.
Your voice is not familiar”…
And so I set a trace.

The voice only laughed,
His voice was sharp as well.
When I heard his cold, calculating laugh,
Only I stood still.

Time somehow passed
And this time his laughter died.
I thought he hung up,
That was until I heard him sigh,

“You’re beautiful, Sadie,
you really are you know.
I can see you standing with the phone,
Through your kitchen window.”

I feel a shudder run down my back
And a cold chill on my neck.
I glance through the window,
And there in the house is the speck.

My eyes widen with the horror,
He’s watching me as I watch him.
And I experience a horrific feeling,
I had not felt since then.

“Do you see me, dear Sadie?
Do you see me in the shadows?
Here, I’ll wave at you.
Can you see me through the window?”

He picks up his hand,
And bends his fingers in a wave.
That memory has lodged itself
In my mind forever to be saved.

I turn my head from the window,
I don’t turn back around.
Even when he snaps at me,
The courage doesn’t rebound.

“Sadie, turn to look at me.
It’s disrespectful not to.
If you don’t turn around now,
I’ll have no choice but to kill you.”

And then…just like that…
He hung up and that was all.
