This is a poem I wrote after my grandmother passed away.
“Grandma”

The sunlight cascades,
Onto the dark wooden cabinets.
As my brother and I sip chocolate milk,
Which has lived in my taste buds,
Through all these years,
And the smell of breakfast,
Fills the air of your apartment,
As we eat in peace.

You’re the roots to this family,
As the branches grow,
Thick and strong,
Reaching out to the sun,
And the heavens above,
An anchor to the rich soils,
You have provided,
As you brought,
Nourishment and support,
Up through the trunks,
And the leaves drip with the sweet morning dew.

Your heart gives such warmth,
Flickering strong against the night sky,
And the constellations,
That is has been ignited in your children,
And their children,
Burning so bright,
As your strong will and values,
Exist in all of us,
And will continue to burn in the hearts,
Of each generation to come.

You passed away,
The day after Jesus was born,
And before the first major snowfall,
Of the year,
Where God will drop so many snowflakes,
Each unique,
Like angels,
Piling together,
Awaiting the great word of the God,
To sing this Sabbath’s mass.

I can still feel you holding my hand tight,
As we spoke for the last time,
And I felt the love in your veins,
Pulse into me with each heartbeat,
As all the words you’ve ever have said,
Will reside in me as I travel the trails,
Of my life,
With the torch you having given me,
Guiding my way,
And the ways of all the family.
