Time is relative. Yesterday we left Jersey. Today is the 1st September. It is 3.40pm. So this time yesterday, we were still in Jersey. We were at the airport waiting for the flight to London. Less than 24 hours ago, I was still on the island where I had lived for seven years, from the age of 22 to 29. Quite formative years, career wise, mentally, emotionally, and physically (I put on a lot of weight when I moved there first and had to fend for myself!)
Now, I am sitting with Kobus in Heathrow and it’s as if we left Jersey ages and ages ago. I have a theory about this phenomenom of the concept of time. All my anxieties and nerves and sadness about leaving the island, have been left on the island. Memories don’t sit on a timeline, they float eternally in your mind, so they are unaware of when they happened. The love for my friends doesn’t belong anywhere except in my heart and my head.
So Jersey is in the past now. Whether it was yesterday I left or ten years ago, it doesn’t matter. I can only go forward.
