In darkling woods ... (Form: Rondeau)
Betrayal

In darkling woods, where fairies play,
I spied a path that led away
into new realms – unknown, unseen -
the entrance to a world of green
with promises of a new day.

As I began, to my dismay,
I saw the signs of its decay:
the dying trees, the streams unclean
in darkling woods.

Accusing fingers, branches gray
pointed to how we each betray
our bond with nature. I had seen
our broken pledge, vile and obscene.
I knew that we had gone astray
in darkling woods.
