The Lie

‘So did you tell him everything?’

‘Of course…’

‘How did he take it?’

‘I don’t know; I’m not sure it really sunk in.’

‘But he believed you?’

‘Absolutely, why wouldn’t he?’

‘Would you believe you?’

‘No but it’s different isn’t it.’

‘How so?’

‘Well, I’m on the inside aren’t I?  I know it’s all a lie.’

‘Do you?  How?’

‘You told me.’

‘What if I lied?’

‘You wouldn’t.’

‘Why not?

‘Because you are a good man.‘

‘Good men are capable of doing bad things.’

‘But they only do them for the right reasons.’

‘How can you be so sure?’

‘I have faith.’

‘Faith can be blind.’

‘Okay, my eyes are wide open, why would you lie to me?’

‘Why would you lie to him?’

‘Orders from above.’

‘Precisely.  Anyway, don’t you think there could be a grain of truth to it?’

‘Never really thought about it.’

‘Perhaps you should.’

‘I’ve got enough to think about thanks.’

‘Well, thinking about this might help you make some sense of the rest.’

‘How do you mean?’

‘I don’t know, I guess I’ve always though it could be quite comforting.’

‘I think it’s a bit scary.’

‘Depends on your interpretation I suppose.’

‘How do you think he’ll interpret it?’

‘However we want him to; he’s very…trusting; I have no concerns about that.’

‘Is that why you picked him, the carpenter’s son?’

‘Jesus?  Sure, he’s as good as anyone.’
