The shadows stretch, and my head's a maze,
As bones and night thoughts draw down the blue days.
Now I watch with an inward gaze,
The sights of a place where pictures hold sway.
The visions I see there dare me to think,
That my life is not all that it could be.
They tempt and they tease as the night hours shrink;
Show me futures that are as they should be.
They frighten and shock. They pander and please.
I labour to be what I could be.
Night Thoughts
When the judge and jury of my night time thoughts,
Hold sway in the midnight hour.
I summon up thoughts and elusive dreams,
And contemplate their power.
Bemoaning the loss of things held dear,
And the lack of things I sought.
I rant and rave at the surface veneer of a life that's sold and bought.
With these thoughts comes a base, cold cheer
That steers my weak intention.
Don't talk to me of fame or love or praise too rich to mention.
