Something I wrote after meditating
I sit in the "grass" with my legs folded.
I put my hands on my knees and keep my back straight,
Focusing on what I am about to do.
I close my eyes and begin to meditate.

Breathe in 1...2...3...4
Hold 1...2...3...4
Breathe out 1...2...3...4...

My mind becomes clear and peaceful.
I concentrate on my surroundings.
The grass is cool to the touch,
I can hear the soft song of birds in the distance.

Breathe in 1...2...3...4
Hold 1...2...3...4
Breathe out 1...2...3...4

A detailed picture of where I am appears in my head.
I can see the butterflies sucking nectar from nearby flowers.
There are two squirrels playing in the trees,
And myself sitting in the grass quietly.

Breathe in 1...2...3...4
Hold 1...2...3...4
Breathe out 1...2....3...4

Now I become aware of my body.
I can feel my heart pump blood through my veins,
I hear it beat methodically as i sit.
This is truly a peaceful experience.

I open my eyes and look around me.
What I see is not what I had pictured.
There is no green grass, no butterflies.
There are no squirrels playing, no birds singing.
Instead, I see buildings and concrete.
No nature-- only manufactured nothingness,
So impersonal and out of touch with the world--
