A mother's response to her son's college admittance...
Judith had everything prepared the moment her eighteen year old son came through the front door.
"Hey, mom! I'm home!"
"In here, dear."
She smiled, lifting the two flute glasses from the kitchen counter, filled with champagne and then turned to her son when he came into the kitchen.
Matthew's expression was one of question.
"What's going on?"
Judith nodded to the open envelope on the kitchen table.
Matthew picked it up, his eyes growing wide as he took note of the sender's address, then looked to his mother.
"You opened it?"
"This affects me just as much as it affects you, you know that."
"Yeah," he said with a nod.
He pulled the letter out of the envelope, slowly grinning as he read over the life-changing words. He never noticed his mother's sudden grim look.
"I got in!" he announced, excitedly. "Rice University!"
"We should celebrate." Judith said, gesturing a glass of champagne to him.
Matthew laughed. "Isn't this illegal?"
"It's a special occasion."
They drank to the future.
After a moment, Matthew pressed his forehead and sat down in one of the kitchen chairs, dizzy.
"I feel funny."
"Did you really think you were going to get away with it?" Her voice was hard and accusing.
Matthew shook his head roughly as if to clear it and sudden panic came over him.
"I feel really weird."
He rose unsteadily to his feet again.
Judith stood there watching him, darkly, hands clenched.
"You're not going to leave, not like he did!" she shouted at him.
Matthew turned and stumbled. His legs were going numb.
"What? Mom..."
He slid down the wall, unable to stand.
She hovered menacingly over him.
"Just like him!" she shouted again, her sanity broken. "You're nothing but trouble!"
His mother was lost.
