I wrote this a while back after receiving one too many 'virus warning' email chain letters |
I received an email from a friend today It had some bad news that needed to be shared right away Apparently there was a press conference just last night With Bill Gates, CNN, and the president of every security website About a new computer virus that they cannot fix It hides in emails entitled “what’s up”, “funny joke”, and “look at these pics” It infects your hard drive, posing as a critical patch Hiding in sectors that your antivirus programs cannot catch It sends all of your credit card numbers to a hacker overseas Who then distributes them in a newsletter for identity thieves Then it overwrites all your data with random zeroes and ones And informs Homeland Security that you are selling bombs and guns If that’s not bad enough, it melts your motherboard, chews up your disks, Causes your monitor to explode, and spreads a toxic gas with several serious health risks I wondered if this was a hoax, like the one about the mutant alligator at the senior prom But the email said that it was confirmed on Snopes, Symantec, and Microsoft.com The email said I should forward it without delay To everyone in my address book, plus print copies to give to my friends, family, co-workers and any strangers I met on the way Maybe it’s a sign of the times, maybe it’s the end of the world, it all seems so horrible… Though maybe, just maybe, I’m being just a bit… too… gullible. |
